The annual School of Accountancy Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner was held on the 25^th January this year, to usher the Year of the Rabbit. What makes this year’s reunion dinner is that it was held at Li Ka Shing Library, a cozier venue close to the hearts of every Accountancy student. The ASoc Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner is one of the highlights in the ASoc calendar as Accountancy students from all 4 years of study come together to celebrate this joyous occasion alongside the faculty members.

The party started at early at 6:30pm. Professor Pang Yang Hoong, Dean of Accountancy, was greeted by an exciting Lion Dance performance. The lion dance is synonymous with Chinese cultural traditions, to signify the chasing away of bad luck in the upcoming new year. At the library, students were treated to traditional Chinese New Year snacks, such as love letters, peanut cakes and not forgetting pineapple tarts. Students cheered and welcomed as Professor Pang and faculty members entered, Professor Pang kick started the whole event with a speech wishing everyone an auspicious and happy new year ahead.

Faculty members and students were treated to a sumptuous buffet spread. The atmosphere was one that was homely and warm-hearted as students and faculty members sat down together and engaged in small chats. Then, it was time for the highlight of the evening, tossing of Yusheng. Students gathered in groups and emphatically tossed up the fish salad while making wishes for the year ahead. Loud cries of “Huat Ah” and “GPA 4.3” were heard as students clearly made their voices heard among the crowd.

Subsequently, games, which involved both the faculty and students, such as Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Taboo were played. Students enthusiastically rushed forward to take part in them, obviously eager to take home the attractive prizes. The crowd laughed as some participants stared blankly in shock when the music and lyrics suddenly stopped during Don’t Forget the Lyrics. The night ended on a high with the announcement of the winners of the lucky draw.

The party was a success as everyone left with smiles and fond memories to take home with. The event was made possible thanks to the hard work and effort put in by the members of the Reunion Dinner committee and the 7^th ASoc Committee.

We definitely look forward to next year’s Chinese New Year Dinner! Last, but not least, ASoc is LOVE!
